In Remix/Restyle, we delve into the evolution of visual media manipulation, exploring the transformative potential of restyling and visual remixing as a future service across movie, gaming, and advertising industries.
As we survey the current landscape of machine vision and machine learning, it becomes evident that the future holds limitless possibilities. Soon, we will possess the capability to effortlessly restyle entire films in unprecedented ways, transcending traditional boundaries to seamlessly restyle live action to anime aesthetics, or the other way around.
With the advent of real-time style transfer processing on consumer devices, the democratization of visual creativity becomes inevitable. While accessibility increases, one might ponder: Will the role of skilled technicians and other visual artisans remain paramount in shaping the most sought-after styles and skins? Or will the democratization of visual creativity render their expertise obsolete in an age where almost anyone can eventually conjure up unique styles?
Amidst this technological revolution, the dynamic between creator and consumer is questioned. Can the eventual desires of viewers for alternative aesthetics coexist with the original vision of directors? Can the restyling artist fulfill the myriad demands for personalized experiences without diluting the essence of the original work?

Makoto Nagahisa began directing films and music videos while working as a commercial planner in an ad agency. In 2017, he released his first short film, And So We Put Goldfish in the Pool., and in 2019 he released his first full-length film, We Are Little Zombies. His latest project was the advertising short film for Gucci, called Kaguya by Gucci, released in 2022.
Join him as he guides us through his career, discussing his unique visual storytelling, how he chooses to convey emotion in his scripts, and some of his exciting upcoming projects.
